Ronald Koeman said the signing of Sergio Agüero could keep Lionel Messi at Barcelona

Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman has been warned that his position could be at stake if he misses the opportunity to sign Sergio Agüero.

After ten glorious years at the Etihad, the Manchester City forward will leave the club this summer when his current contract ends.

The news has led to much speculation about where the 32-year-old will end up, with various clubs across Europe linked to his signing.

Among those teams are Spanish giants Barcelona and former club star Rivaldo believes the move would be perfect for all parties.

“Signing Aguero on a free transfer could be a blow for Barcelona,” the Brazilian told Betfair. “He has a good relationship with Lionel Messi and, with Barça without Luis Suárez this season, Agüero would probably go straight into the starting eleven.

“His arrival could also help the new club president, Joan Laporta, convince Messi to stay at the club.”

Barcelona are currently going through something of a transitional period, with Koeman potentially seeking a major rebuilding of his team.

As such, the Dutchman is said to be looking for players who will be with the club for the long term rather than an aging Aguero, regardless of his talent.

Rivaldo, who played at the Camp Nou for five years between 1997 and 2002, says the Dutchman should reconsider the forward as an option to help with his ambitions.

“Apparently, Ronald Koeman does not agree with a possible move to sign Agüero because he is more focused on renewing the Barça squad by signing younger players,” he added. “But this would be a great opportunity to reinforce the attack without spending too much money.

“Koeman should remember that he only has one year left on his contract, so if he doesn’t win titles between now and the end of next season, he probably won’t have time to complete his project.”

Barça have been strongly linked to a goal move by Borussia Dortmund, Erling Haaland and Lyon’s Memphis Depay as attacking options, however, with the club’s finances reportedly shaky, Rivaldo believes a free transfer is best for Koeman.

Memphis Depay and possibly Erling Haaland are said to be in talks with the club. But those players will cost big fees, so Koeman should carefully weigh the options before turning them down, especially when it comes to a player of Kun Agüero quality. “
