Romelu Lukaku is used to putting the ball into the back of the opponent’s net, but on Wednesday night he denied his Inter Milan teammate a possible winning goal against Shakhtar Donetsk.
The Belgian striker was left with his head in his hands at the end of the San Siro when the Ukrainian team won a battle point in the Champions League match.
He helped Shakhtar secure third place in their group and book a place in the Europa League at the expense of the Italians.
But Inter had a glorious chance to win it in the 89th minute when Manchester United’s failure Alexis Sánchez climbed higher in a corner.
The Chilean pushed his header towards the goal but could only find the head of Lukaku, who was standing directly in front of the goalkeeper, and cleared it to the safety of Shakhtar.
It remains to be seen whether the goal would have stood if he hadn’t missed Lukaku’s head because the former Chelsea, United and Everton striker seemed to be offside and blocking the goalkeeper’s view.
Inter, who could have been victorious, finished last in the group with six points after drawing three of their six games and not winning at home, and will not even have the comfort of second-row competition.
United fans were quick to make a joke about the incident, with @TheManUtdWay describing the incident as ‘United’s peak 2018/19 right there’.
@TTYTOM added: ‘You can get Sánchez and Lukaku out of Manchester United, but you can’t get Manchester United out of Sánchez and Lukaku.
Meanwhile @ NumberZero29 tweeted: ‘Sánchez almost passed Inter, but then Lukaku realized he was playing for Gladbach and headed the ball.’
In the same group, Real Madrid made sure to finish first with a dominant 2-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach thanks to Karim Benzema’s double.
Monchengladbach advanced to the round of 16 in second place with Shakhtar falling in the Europa League.
“There are many regrets, however, I honestly do not feel that there was a lack of cunning, determination or concentration,” said Inter coach Antonio Conte in frustration.
‘We lacked a goal. If you don’t score, you don’t win.
Lautaro Martínez rang the crossbar in the seventh minute, but Inter created few chances after that, despite dominating possession in a soggy San Siro, and managed only four shots on goal.
