Roma extended their unbeaten streak to seven games in all competitions with a comfortable 2-0 win over Fiorentina at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.
Leonardo Spinazzola shot home in a first game before Pedro Rodríguez’s strike secured the points against a below par Viola team.
The result places the capital club in seventh place with 11 points, but Fiorentina remains stranded at 11th with just one win in their last five Serie A games.
The visitors enjoyed an encouraging opening in the second minute when Gaetano Castrovilli fired wide before launching a dangerous ball through the area that required an alert clearance.
But that proved to be as good as for La Viola, and they trailed off in the 12th minute when a long shot from Antonio Mirante went over the defense for Spinazzola to zip past and slide a shot into the bottom corner.
Roma were soon on top and pressed for a second, but Fiorentina goalkeeper Bartlomiej Dragowski was determined to frustrate them when he pushed in a header from Edin Dzeko before making an excellent double save to deny goals from Rick Karsdorp and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
One-way traffic continued for much of the second half, and the Giallorossi finally doubled their lead at the 70 minute mark when Pedro took advantage of an attractive low cross from Mkhitaryan.
It was a lousy performance from the visitors, and things got even worse when Lucas Martínez Quarta, in his second Serie A appearance with the Viola, earned a direct red card for a reckless lunge against Dzeko.
