Midfielder Rodri couldn’t hide his joy after Spain inflicted Germany’s biggest competitive defeat on Tuesday night.
The Manchester City star had described the showdown as a ‘life and death’ clash with Spain that needed a win to overhaul Joachim Low’s side and secure a place in the 2021 final.
And Rodri, who scored the third goal in the 6-0 takedown in Seville, insisted they could have scored more.
“We walk on them in every way,” he said.
“We scored six, but it could have been a lot more. We are still a group with little experience but that will give us a lot of confidence ”.
Forward Álvaro Morata was happy to silence critics of Spain after they managed a 1-1 draw against Switzerland on Saturday.
“We had the opportunity to send a strong message to the whole world and we have,” he said.
Spain coach Luis Enrique paid tribute to all the players on his team after their incredible victory, which he said was just what they deserved for their efforts throughout the campaign.
“This victory belongs to all the players, even those who did not play,” Luis Enrique told reporters after his team finished at the top of the A4 League over Germany.
“It would be unfair to point someone out because to do what we did, to push a team like Germany across the field, you need all the players, from defense to attack, to work hard.”
Luck seemed to desert Spain in Saturday’s 1-1 draw in Switzerland as they missed a host of opportunities, including two penalties, while unlucky enough to lose 1-0 to Ukraine last month.
However, it all clicked into an astonishing display against the 2014 World Cup champions, as midfielders Fabián Ruiz, Koke and Rodri dictated the game and forward Ferran Torres achieved a hat-trick.
“This was one of those nights that happens very rarely, when everything goes exactly as planned. The players came out enthusiastic and did everything right. This is what you get when you combine quality and attitude ”, added Luis Enrique.
‘We felt we didn’t deserve to lose a single game this season. We scored 13 goals and only conceded three, the numbers speak for themselves.
“We are immensely happy, this is a real boost for the players and we are going to enjoy this moment.”
Germany coach Joachim Low was unable to explain his team’s humiliating 6-0 loss to Spain in the UEFA Nations League on Tuesday, causing them to lose a place in the competition’s semi-finals.
“I really don’t know what happened to the team,” Loew told reporters after Germany’s toughest loss in 89 years and the worst in competitive soccer.
“We hardly had a chance and we didn’t win a single individual battle on the field.”
Germany have been on a downward path since crashing in the group stage at the 2018 World Cup and have only won three of their last eight international matches.
