Bayern Munich returned to winning ways when Robert Lewandowski scored his twelfth Bundesliga goal of the season in an engrossing 3-1 win over VfB Stuttgart on Saturday.
VfB Stuttgart 1-3 Bayern Munich
Goals: 1-0 Coulibaly (20 ‘), 1-1 Eat (38 ‘), 1-2 Lewandowski (45 ‘+ 1), 1-3 Coast (88 ‘)
After losing points in a 1-1 draw against Werder Bremen last weekend, Hansi Flick’s men started trying to make sure that didn’t happen here again. Thomas Müller moved behind the home defense in just the second minute but couldn’t find a teammate with his cross, while Lewandowski hit the post with a heavy header moments later. However, they did not do things their way, as a confident Stuttgart side, undefeated from matchday one, refused to give in to the pressure. Philipp Förster and Silas Wamangituka connected well on the right a couple of times, and it was that duo that combined at half-time to set up the opening goal, with a Silas cross into the center by Tanguy Coulibaly. Bayern picked up their intensity after that and tied a few minutes before the break with a drilled shot from Coman, before Lewandowski gave the visitors the lead at half-time with a brilliant shot deflected from outside the area.
The game continued in the same way after the break; Far from going into damage limitation mode, Stuttgart stuck to their game plan and sought to draw. However, there were fewer clear starts than in the first half, with a pair of Lewandowski headers the closest to either side was in the opening minutes. Silas took matters into his own hands in an attempt to take his level aside, his pace and deception a constant threat to Bayern’s bottom line, and set up Orel Mangala with a run and a brilliant turn, but the shot from the Unmarked midfielder from eight yards was blocked by Niklas Süle. Inevitably, the hosts regretted failing as substitute Douglas Costa sealed the points for Bayern in the final stages after cutting from the right to punch home from the edge of the area.
