Retired Chelsea Legend Didier Drogba Jokes He Will Put His Boots On Again After Petr Cech Call Up – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

Petr Cech’s surprising inclusion of Frank Lampard in his Premier League squad has another retired Chelsea legend desperate to get his boots back on …

Didier Drogba reacted to the news that his former teammate, now a performance advisor at Stamford Bridge, was coming out of retirement as a backup goalkeeper option in case Lampard needed him.

The 42-year-old Ivorian hung up his boots two years ago, but joked on Twitter that he was ‘already on his way to Cobham’, Chelsea’s training ground.

Drogba helped Chelsea win four Premier League titles, four FA Cups and a famous Champions League victory over Bayern Munich.

His tongue-in-cheek post will undoubtedly make the Blues nostalgic for their former target, who instilled fear in defenses during that golden period.

Drogba joined Chelsea in 2004 and left for Shanghai Shenhua in 2012 before moving to Galatasaray and then returning to Stamford Bridge on a one-year contract.

A pair of spells in MLS followed with Montreal Impact and Phoenix Rising, where he proved he was still a top scorer before finally ending 2018.

Cech is 38 years old, so he’s by no means old in terms of goalkeepers and Lampard insisted his inclusion in the team made sense.

The coach added Edouard Mendy as Rennes number one in the transfer window with Kepa Arrizabalaga struggling enormously in goal.

“It’s definitely not for romance,” Lampard said of bringing Cech out of retirement.

‘Pete has been training with goalies for a while. He is very fit and still relatively young. Pete finished playing when he probably could have gone on and assumed his role at Chelsea, which he does very well.

He reasoned: ‘We had a space in the team and this year is like no other because of Covid and what he could do with the selection and isolation. So it was easy. Pete will still do his day job, but he’s there if we need him.

Whether we will see it or not, I’m not so sure. It depends on how the season goes with Covid and isolations. I certainly felt like it was a no-brainer to have Pete on the team for that reason and he can only help the goalies we have. He’s one of the best in the world in the modern era. ‘
