The Western Regional Police Command has deployed a team of officers to keep the peace in Upper and Lower Dixcove in the western region’s Ahanta West Township, following further clashes between chiefs, in which six members of the Upper royal family Dixcove were injured.
District Police Superintendent Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, a regional public relations officer, told reporters that on Monday, March 15, at approximately 10.50 a.m., Nana Kwesi Agyemang IX, Omanhene del Bajo Dixcove, telephoned the police to report that he had received information that Obrempong Hima Dekyi’s mother and some Upper Dixcove chiefs had been attacked.
According to him, the attack occurred in the Torome community, but they were rescued to their Palace.
Police, he said, quickly dispatched a team there to salvage the situation.
However, DSP Adiku said that immediately after the call, Upper Dixcove’s Obrempong Hima Dekyi also called to report that his mother and some Upper Dixcove chiefs had been attacked in the Lower Dixcove Palace.
He said that the police mobilized and moved to Lower Dixcove, where they met Nana Diako Kra, with a swollen face, who was escorting her to board a vehicle to the hospital.
Police loaded him into his vehicle and drove to the Lower Palace of Dixcove, where six of the victims were seen sitting there.
They are made up of Nana Dekyi Manza, Torome’s queen mother; Christiana Akua Yeboah, mother of Obrempong Hima Dekyi; Charlotte Yeboah, Nana Diako Kra, Jonah Aidoo, and Sadick Shobajo.
She said they were all sent to the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital for treatment.
“The actual cause of the attack is not immediately known,” he said, although no arrests have been made so far.
He said the police would be on the ground to uphold the law and ensure that peace prevailed.
Meanwhile, Nana Hima Denkyi has called for peace between the two sides of Dixcove, saying the communities have suffered over the years as a result of their protracted dispute over territorial boundaries.
“We must put our differences behind and move towards the sustainable development of our areas,” he told a news conference in Takoradi on Wednesday.
He called on relevant state agencies to play their respective roles effectively to restore lasting peace in their areas.
Monday’s standoff has been described by some residents as retaliation for an attack on some royal members of the Lower Dixcove side last year.
Currently, Lower Dixcove has 39 communities, while Upper Dixcove has nine communities.
