President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has asked the family of the late former President, Jerry John Rawlings, to resolve all outstanding issues regarding his burial and convey the agreed date to the Presidency.

A statement dated December 10, 2020 and signed by the Chief of Staff, Ms. Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, and addressed to the families’ lawyers, said that “the Presidency has received letters from the Office of the State Awadada Anlo dated November 30, 2020 and a press release from the Agbotui and Allied Families office dated December 1, 2020, both in connection with the death of the late former president.
“The president has taken note of the content of the letter and the press release,” he said.
“The President believes that the government’s obligation to grant the former President of the Republic, His Excellency, the late Jerry John Rawlings, a proper state burial is inviolable and that at the appropriate time this should happen,” the Chief of Staff statement said.
“In light of the foregoing and taking note of the issues raised by his clients, the President would appreciate if the families of the late President could resolve all pending matters and transfer an agreed date for his funeral to the Office of the President for the necessary se they must take action as soon as possible, ”he added.

Awadada’s reaction
Not satisfied with this development, the Anlo Traditional Council, in a statement, expressed outrage at the disregard for the culture and traditions of the Anlo people regarding the funerary rites of the former president.
According to the council, the failure of his family and government to involve him in discussions about the date and funeral rites of the former president was an affront to the culture and traditions of the Anlo people and must be remedied immediately.
He said the late Jerry John Rawlings was also a “properly installed Chief of Anlo, whose unfortunate disappearance must be dealt with in accordance with the customs and traditions of Anlo.”
