Parents with wards at GIU Christian Academy (GICA) in Accra are asking the school leadership to reverse their decision to fire their wards for not paying their fees.
According to the aggrieved parents, the school issued a letter titled “Reenrollment Letter” stating that its wards are no longer GIU students because they failed to comply with a school directive on unpaid fees by a certain date.
The parents in a petition to the school issued on Friday, September 25, said the letter is illegal and an affront to President Akufo-Addo’s directive on deadlines for reopening schools.
Therefore, they have given the school until September 30, 2020 to withdraw that “illegal letter”.
Below is the full letter from the parents.
PETITION HAVING GIU CHRISTIAN ACADEMY WITHDRAWAL THE RE-ENROLLMENT LETTER AND INVOLVE PARENTS IN THE ONLINE PROGRAM REGARDING MODELS TO TEACH AND FEES WHILE THEY WAIT FOR SCHOOL TO RESTART IN JANUARY 2021.
We, the undersigned, are parents of wards at GIU Christian Academy (GICA). In fact, some of us have had pupils at school for a decade! Before enrolling our pupils, we were made to pay the admission fees, among others, which subsist during the period that they are GIU students.
Even though we have had problems with GICA from time to time in the past, we continue to adhere to the belief that things would get better at all times. Recent policies and directives since the government imposed a closure as a result of which the school was suspended, it has forced us (the parents) to submit a petition to the school administration as follows:
- We urge GICA to withdraw the open and undated ‘Reenrollment Letter’ (see attached Annex A) sent to parents indicating that their wards are no longer GIU students because they did not comply with a school directive for unpaid fees by a date determined. We consider this letter to be illegal and an affront to the directive of the
President of the Republic of Ghana on the deadlines for the reopening of schools. Therefore, we give GICA until September 30, 2020 to withdraw said illegal letter.
- GICA’s reasons for charging full fees are neither scientific nor reasonable, pointing to electricity, water bills, and teacher salaries as underlying factors. Therefore, we urge GICA to urgently involve parents in the appropriate modalities and fees for the online program, which in our understanding is an interim measure only to keep students busy and not a replacement of the rescheduled school period. . Therefore, parents cannot be expected to pay full-term fees for this program while it is not a tuition at the school. At best, the online program should be voluntary and not necessarily imposed on parents, some of whom have lost their jobs and income and face enormous challenges in making devices and data available to their wards.
- GICA owners should stop making seemingly racist comments about the mindset of Ghanaians, among others, and positively engage in the interest of all stakeholders.
