Popular anti-corruption crusader Paul Collins Appiah Ofori has called on Martin Amidu to reverse his decision to resign as Special Prosecutor in the interest of Ghana and not of any political party.
PC Appiah Ofori, as he is popularly called, said that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo must urgently invite the Special Prosecutor and listen to the reasons why he resigned and resolve them.
“Ghana first … not NDC and not NPP, so all Ghanaians should support this man to come back and work for Ghana,” he said.
In a letter addressed to President Akufo-Addo on Monday, November 16, Amidu said that his decision is to allow the president to take the necessary steps to appoint a replacement as required by law.
In what sounds like a protest, Mr. Amidu said that he had accepted to be appointed Special Prosecutor on a condition of the “firm promise of the President to respect and guarantee the same on the part of his Government for my independence and freedom of action as Special Prosecutor.” .
Mr. Amidu, who publicly announced his resignation, explained that his decision to make his resignation public was due to events preceding his report on the Agyapa Royalties Limited transactions and related matters, and described those events as a “traumatic experience”.
In response to Ghana Dadwene’s development of Onua FM on Monday, the former member of parliament from the Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa constituency in the central region said, on Twi: “I am saddened that he resigned because in the fight against corruption if no ‘If you can get an honest man to fight corruption, you can’t win. “
“He is scrupulously honest, so he will neither tolerate nor tolerate corruption. His resignation has hurt me ”.
Explaining why the fight against corruption should not be left unattended, the former MP said that “we need money to do all kinds of things like free SHSH, One-District-One-Factory, roads and so many projects, we need money.”
He acknowledged that Mr. Amidu “was fighting [corruption]. I am not pleased and ask you to reverse your decision. The president should call him into his office and talk with him to rescind the decision. If the president speaks to him, it will have an impact and then the main reason he resigned must be addressed. “
PC Appiah Ofori said that “through the fight, the government will get money to do more development projects, so everyone should appeal to him to annul that decision.”
Impact on the 2020 elections
When asked if the resignation will have any impact on the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the December 7, 2020 elections, the anti-corruption crusader noted that “it will not affect the NPP’s chances in the 2020 elections. The NDC will not you can use this to campaign even though they are happy he resigned. “
He said “[the NDC] They have fired Amidu from the party so that they have nothing to say about him because he denounced corruption in the NDC, which is why he was fired ”.
“They are happy that he was not there to expose them. They will jump in and go on a picnic to celebrate the resignation. “
