The Chipmunks increased their chances of qualifying for Cameroon 2022 thanks to Saturday’s win over the Crocodiles.

The Republic of Benin approached qualification for the 2022 African Cup of Nations when they won 1-0 against Lesotho at Stade Charles de Gaulle.

Jodel Dossou’s effort in the 24th minute thanks to an assist from Khaled Adenon was all that Michel Dussuyer’s men needed to secure all the maximum points at stake against Thabo Senong’s Crocodiles.

After falling 4-2 at home to Nigeria in their last outing, the South African country went to Porto-Novo with the ambition to revive their fading hopes for Afcon, but the hosts had a different idea.

A second consecutive victory for the Republic of Benin leaves them in second place in Group L with five points, one point below Gernot Rohr’s Super Eagles and four points above Sierra Leone, which is third with two. points.

Lesotho sits at the bottom of that zone after picking up just one point from three starts.

Dussuyer will lead his team to Maseru’s Setsoto Stadium for the second leg on Tuesday, and victory will see them land a match in Cameroon, regardless of the result between Sierra Leone and Nigeria in Freetown.

Since its first appearance in the 2004 edition held in Tunisia, Benin has appeared four times in the top biennial African football competition.

Their last appearance in Egypt 2019 saw them fall into the quarter-finals, losing to eventual runners-up Senegal after a 1-0 loss. The Chipmunks’ biggest highlight in that outing saw them defeat pre-tournament favorite Morocco on penalties after scores reached 1-1 after extra time.
