Reported Arsenal goal Thomas Partey benched by Atlético for the first game of the League

Thomas Partey has been named to the bench by Diego Simeone for Atlético de Madrid’s 2020/21 La Liga opener against Granada, amid continued ties with Arsenal.

The Ghana international was left out of the starting eleven, and the Argentine tactician filled his midfield with Angel Correa, Koke, Saúl and Yannick Carrasco.

There have been no reports that Partey has any kind of injury or that he is not fit for the match.

The development is sure to increase speculation about a possible move to Arsenal for the player, and the Gunners have made it a priority target.

He and Lyon’s Houssem Aouar are believed to be on Arsenal’s agenda as the transfer window comes to an end, and the club reportedly had an offer rejected by the Frenchman.

Atleti has continuously held firm on Partey this summer, and it is believed that they will not be sold for anything less than the value of the release clause (£ 45 million, Express).

TBR view: a sign that something is happening?

It could well be just a tactical call from Simeone, but it could also be that something is happening behind the scenes, and perhaps the player’s mind is not totally clear at the moment.

Partey is a key player for Atleti and tends to be a starter in most games so it’s a bit suspicious that amid all the speculation from Arsenal he was benched for the first game.

Maybe if there wasn’t something, the 27-year-old would be on the team as normal.

However, the fact is that Arsenal still need to raise funds to activate that release clause.
