A team of election observers deployed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs a report on their assessment of the country’s readiness ahead of the December elections.
The team led by Jean-Claude Kassi Brou met with Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey on Tuesday, November 17, 2020.
According to Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, president of the ECOWAS Commission, the electoral processes in the country undertaken by the Electoral Commission were well managed and controlled.
In his address, he indicated that the Commission reached this conclusion based on its interactions with the Electoral Commission of Ghana.
“The first comment is about the processes; This is related to the issues that were raised; the electoral roll in particular and for that we met with the Electoral Commission. We believe that the overall process was very well managed. We had a long meeting with the Electoral Commission and they assured us that the process was done in a very professional manner… ”, he said.
In regards to the controversy surrounding the removal of some 30,000 names from the voter registry, Kassi Brou said the EC has assured them that they will address it in accordance with the provisions of the law.
Kassi Brou’s second comment about Ghana’s preparation before the December elections had to do with the country’s overall security.
He said the issues related to vigilante groups emerged in his discussions with the leaders of the country’s main security agencies.
“We really want to congratulate the authorities for taking all necessary measures to ensure that the elections are free of violence. We feel comfortable with that… ”, he said.
The ECOWAS Commission also referred to the role of various religious bodies in the run-up to the December elections.
While President Kassi Brou emphasized a positive outlook for Ghana’s upcoming elections, he also warned that dialogue between stakeholders must be improved.
