According to a report from Marca, Liverpool could miss out on a € 20m (£ 18m) injection of funds from Barcelona as part of the Phillipe Coutinho deal.
The £ 142 million deal to bring the Brazilian to the Camp Nou, understandably, had some clauses and extras attached, and one of them was a € 20 million appearance bonus to be paid when Coutinho turned 100.th Appearance for La Blaugrana.
The La Liga giants have used Coutinho 90 times so far, and it looked like Liverpool was going to receive a huge financial gain later this year, but now it looks like things may have changed.
In fact, Coutinho has just undergone knee surgery and is not expected to return until the end of April, at which point there may be less than 10 games left of the season, which means that this 20 million euro clause will not be active.
The report goes on to claim that Coutinho could be sold this summer, meaning he will never reach 100 games for Barca, thus denying the Reds this payday.
Of course, he could come back earlier than planned, or he could stay beyond this summer, but the fact is, he’s been in disgrace at Barca for a while, having been loaned to Bayern Munich last season, and ties to a Barcelona departures have not disappeared in recent times, so a move in summer is apparently possible.
Liverpool may be an elite football club with cash to spend, but £ 18 million is not a figure any club in the world would look to.
Hopefully, for Liverpool’s sake, Coutinho can bounce back quickly and make it to 100 games for Barca.
