Chelsea can still look to get stronger in midfield before the transfer window closes, with a new report suggesting that the club is weighing a decision to make a new move for that area of the pitch.
According to the Telegraph, the Blues are considering whether or not they should go for a defensive midfielder who can sit in front of the four in the back.
West Ham’s Declan Rice is said to have been a prime target for manager Frank Lampard, but London rivals are reluctant to lose the 21-year-old.
The report also names Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey and explains that Chelsea scouts have been watching him in recent months.
His contract with Atlético de España currently includes a £ 45 million buyout clause and has proven too expensive for Arsenal, who are interested in signing the 27-year-old.
The Telegraph report explains that Chelsea’s priority in its current state is to remove a few more players from the squad, but does not rule out the possibility of trying to strengthen in midfield.
The 27-year-old Partey is a serious defensive midfielder who seems to be a perfect fit in the style of Premier League football and has been a brilliant player for Atlético in recent years.
The Ghana international is always present in the center of the park, where he can break the game and is a true powerhouse, as well as being clean in possession and aware of his surroundings.
Chelsea’s transfer window has been exceptional so far and many top-class players have arrived at Stamford Bridge, but Partey for £ 45 million would be the icing on the cake.
