Karim Benzema scored two goals and provided an assist to lead Real Madrid to a 4-1 victory over Huesca on Saturday afternoon at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium.
After a somewhat slow start, Los Blancos came to life thanks to a sensational goal from Eden Hazard before Benzema scored just before half-time. The French forward then assisted Fede Valverde’s goal and scored a late header to complete the decisive victory.
However, a sleepy final 20 minutes for Real Madrid in which Huesca spoiled the potential clean sheet will give Zinedine Zidane something to focus on in the movie theater as his team prepares for the La Liga clash. Midweek Champions with Inter.
Zidane was finally able to start the trio of Marco Asensio, Benzema and Hazard on attack, while the plethora of injuries on the right-back left Lucas Vázquez tasked with playing in that position alongside Raphael Varane’s substitute Eder Militao.
Real Madrid took a while to get on the attack, with a Sergio Ramos header that Andrés Fernández saved midway through and served as the first real scoring chance. At the other end, Huesca were not exactly right, but they were putting pressure on the Real Madrid defense.
Real Madrid were pushing and shoving to try and open the Huesca defense, but found it too difficult. It was then that Hazard took matters into his own hands as he picked up a pass in the middle of Huesca and uncorked a deflected shot that Andrés had no chance to save to give Real Madrid a 1-0 lead.
The goal served as a spark for Zidane’s men and they found another moments before the break, when Lucas Vázquez threw a cross to Benzema, who took the ball with his chest and passed Andrés to make it 2-0.
Zidane’s first change was experimental and came shortly after intermission, with the usual left-back Ferland Mendy replacing Lucas Vázquez on the right-back.
Real Madrid football flowed very well, with Hazard at the helm, and it quickly became 3-0. Huesca did not clear and Benzema threw a pass to Fede Valverde, and the young Uruguayan finished off with his right leg to the net.
In the hour, Zidane made another three changes, with Isco in place of Fede Valverde, Rodrygo in Asensio and Vinicius Junior in replacement of Hazard.
After the Vinicius-Benzema controversy in the middle of the week it was interesting to see how the two paired up on the field, and in one minute a fantastic run by Vinicius ended with a cross to the Frenchman, who bounced a shot over the crossbar.
The final change for Real Madrid saw Toni Kroos come in for Casemiro, but the whites played too relaxed and allowed Huesca to come back a goal, with David Ferreiro scoring an excellent cross from Rafa Mir, cutting Real Madrid’s 3-1 lead with 15 minutes to go.
After failing to connect the first time, Vinicius and Benzema reconnected in the final minutes and this time they did well, as Vinicius’ landing header rebounded and Benzema headed in to complete the score of 4-1.
