Real Madrid beat a Celta de Vigo in form 2-0 at home on Saturday thanks to a goal and assist from Spanish pair Lucas Vázquez and Marco Asensio, placing the team above Atlético de Madrid at the top of the league.

The victory brought the Spanish champions to the top with 36 points, one ahead of second-placed Atlético, who have three fewer games.

“We said before the game that after sliding against Elche, we wanted to show our usual aggressiveness and recover the ball at the top of the field,” said Vazquez.

“Right now, every game is key, we are on a good streak, we did not expect to draw the other day but the team is in good shape and if we continue playing like this we will fight for everything.”

The victory lifts Arsenal to 11th place in the table with 23 points, six points behind European positions. West Brom remains second from the bottom with eight points after 17 games.

In the Bundesliga, RB Leipzig rose to the top of the German soccer league after Dani Olmo’s goal in the second half earned them a 1-0 win at VfB Stuttgart on Saturday.

Bayer Leverkusen fell to third place after a 2-1 loss at Eintracht Frankfurt as league action resumed after a short Christmas break.

Leipzig have 31 points after 14 games, one ahead of Bayern Munich, who face Mainz, second from last place, on Sunday and three above Leverkusen, third.
