Real Madrid fans would take Harry Kane’s signing for Cristiano Ronaldo’s return in the blink of an eye, but neither the 27-year-old nor the 36-year-old England captain is seen as a viable option this summer.
Kane was being advertised as the ‘cheap’ option on Spanish radio on Tuesday. But while the Tottenham forward may not have a Mino Raiola figure by his side to hugely inflate his signing costs, he does have Daniel Levy as president and contract until 2024.
Florentino Pérez has been a longtime fan, but the serious interest ended when Kane signed a six-year deal for a base salary of £ 200,000 a week in 2018. That career move smelled like a player on his way to becoming a single club player.
Madrid’s interest could be triggered by a change of mind from Kane, but the contractual situation would still make any transfer almost impossible and would not coincide with plan A, which is still waiting for Kylian Mbappé to finish his contract at Paris Saint-Germain.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo’s disputed comeback resurfaced on Tuesday when Gareth Bale said he would return to Madrid in the summer. Diario AS dedicated pages 1, 2 and 3 to the possible reunion of the forward ‘BBC’ of Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and Cristiano who won four Champions League for the club.
“Seeing the BBC again excites me,” said AS columnist from Madrid, Tomás Roncero. That sentiment is not shared by the Bernabéu, who booed both of them at the time. Unloved in his prime, although fans appreciated Ronaldo in his later years at the club, there will now be little affection for them. Reuniting the old gang wouldn’t make much sense.
It is true that Real Madrid continues to try to avoid the potentially damaging consequences of this entire season being played behind closed doors. They have yet to agree on a 10 percent pay cut with the players, one that is necessary to avoid having to report losses of 90 million euros (77 million pounds) for this season.
“It is very unlikely that these players will be able to be in LaLiga,” Spanish Liga holder Javier Tebas said last week. I wish they could come, but we have to be realistic. I don’t think either of these two players is [signed this summer].
He was talking about Erling Haaland and Mbappé, who remain targets for Madrid and Barcelona despite the harsh economic reality. Madrid have Mbappé’s desire to play for Madrid and his willingness to exhaust his current contract.
Barcelona President Joan Laporta hopes that various income-generating schemes and his relationship with Raiola could give him an opportunity to confuse Tebas’s fears about the doomed nature of any bid for Haaland.
If Tebas is proven correct, both Real Madrid and Barcelona will look for alternative ways to cool off this summer. Barcelona feel that if they can persuade Messi to stay and bring Ansu Fati out of injury, they will come out without earning a massive name.
Madrid, with Benzema as a single man in the attack so advanced in terms of quality of the substitute forwards Mariano Díaz and Hugo Duro, and the loan player Luka Jovic, have the greatest urgency to do something else.
But paying Juventus 25 million euros (£ 21 million) so they can get Ronaldo back and sitting down with Levy trying to get Kane out of North London are solutions that create as many new problems as they solve.
