Real Madrid are facing a defensive crisis after center-backs Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane left with suspected injuries playing for their countries on Tuesday.
Ramos was substituted in the 43rd minute of Spain’s 6-0 victory over Germany in Seville in the UEFA Nations League.
A brief statement from the Spanish soccer federation said that the defender suffered “serious discomfort in the right hamstring.”
Varane was replaced at halftime of France’s 4-2 win over Sweden in Paris, also apparently with a hamstring problem.
“I had to take Raphael off because I had a little problem”, The Blues said coach Didier Deschamps.
The extent of Ramos’ injury will be assessed on Wednesday, when the 34-year-old will undergo further testing.
The Spanish medical team wants to see how the injury evolves overnight before making a definitive diagnosis.
Ramos, who became the European player with the most international appearances on Saturday, breaking the record of Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, was participating in his 178th international match.
The Real Madrid and Spain captain now looks certain that he will miss his club’s league game with Villarreal on Saturday.
Then he would face a race to get fit for a crucial Champions League clash at the Internazionale next Wednesday.
In addition to Ramos and Varane, Madrid also does not currently have third-choice center-back Eder Militao, who tested positive for the coronavirus on November 2.
If the absence of all three is confirmed, that would leave Nacho Fernández, who just returned from injury, as the club’s only available senior central defender this weekend.
