Real Madrid Castilla’s preparation for the new season ended with a 2-0 win over Rayo Majadahonda on Saturday. Madrid’s Majadahonda, who was relegated from Spain’s second division the season before the previous one, was defeated by goals from Víctor Chust and Sergio Arribas.
Raúl’s team will begin their Second B campaign against Las Rozas next weekend as they seek promotion to LaLiga SmartBank. There is a quiet confidence in Real Madrid that the B team could be promoted this season thanks to the resources available to Raúl.
The former striker guided Real Madrid’s Youth A to UEFA Youth League glory, and many of those players joined the coach on the Castilla side this season. Saturday’s 11th outing against Majadahonda featured seven of those Youth League champions in Chust, Arribas, Sergio Santos, Antonio Blanco, Iván Morante, Marvin Park and Carlos Dotor.
Marvin and Arribas debuted in Zinedine Zidane’s first team against Real Sociedad in September, while Diego Altube and Miguel Gutiérrez are among those who have trained before with the senior team. In summer, Real Madrid signed Hugo Duro from Getafe in order to use him in the Castilla squad, although he has also been included in the Champions League first squad.
With Raúl at the helm, no player on the squad will want to step out of line for fear of risking their relationship with the club legend. The team has the air of an elite quarry but, with the new signings of Duro, Hugo Vallejo and Kenneth Soler, they have that professional competition in the third tier.
Last season, Raúl’s Castilla finished seventh in Group 1 of Segunda B, without reaching the playoffs. There is greater hope and expectation this time that they can mount a promotion momentum – they haven’t been in the second division since 2014.
