Casemiro insists the players are behind under pressure boss Zinedine Zidane as Real Madrid face a decisive Champions League clash with Borussia Mönchengladbach.
The Real Madrid squad strongly supports Zinedine Zidane as their goal is to avoid a hugely embarrassing Champions League exit, says Casemiro.
Madrid have become used to success in Europe’s top club competition with Zidane, having lifted the trophy three times during his first stint in charge.
Real Madrid heads to the last round of matches, third in Group B of the Champions League
However, the reigning LaLiga champions were eliminated in the knockout stage last season, falling 4-2 on aggregate to Manchester City, and are in serious danger of not being able to leave their group for the first time.
The Whites sit third in the table heading into the final round of matches, when on Wednesday they will host leader Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Spanish capital.
Having also failed in the early stages of his title defense, The future of Zidane is seriously questioned – and missing the knockout rounds would only increase speculation that he might be ready for capture.
“The team is with the coach” – Casemiro backs Zidane
Midfielder Casemiro, however, insists that the head coach, under pressure, retains the faith of his players. “What am I going to say about Zidane? He has made history, last year he won two trophies. Many times we do not realize what Zidane has done,” said the Brazilian international.
“The season is strange, it is true. The preseason was not good and playing every two or three days is difficult. The team is with the coach. And I appreciate what he’s done and what he’s doing. ”
Madrid have only lost one of their five previous meetings with Gladbach in European competition, although three of those matches ended in a draw.
Real Madrid prepares for “the most important game of the year”
Zidane has only failed to get out of the group stage once in his entire career, back in 2000 when he played for Juventus. Casemiro is confident that Madrid will not suffer a similar fate this season, as they prepare for the game as if it were a final.
“We know that tomorrow is the most important game of the year,” he told the media. “We all know that tomorrow is a final. We have to face it like it’s a final.
“In this club they have taught us that you don’t play finals, you win. We are not thinking of anything other than winning.
“We know that there is a good rival and that they are the first of the group., so we have to respect that. But we will go out to win. ”
As for Gladbach, the Bundesliga club is looking for the first time to reach the knockout phase of the Champions League on the third attempt, having previously failed to do so in 2015-16 and 2016-17.
