Karim Benzema warmed up for Liverpool by scoring for the seventh consecutive game for the first time in his career at Real Madrid.
His header in the 73rd minute after a cross from Vinicius made it 2-0 and finally finished off the stubborn Eibar.
It was Brilliant Benzema’s 18th goal in La Liga. He has scored nine in his last seven games and now has 24 in all competitions.
He is in good shape and so are Madrid, who are now three points behind the leader Atlético de Madrid, who will play against Sevilla tomorrow.
Benzema was about to score after three minutes when he received the ball with a sloppy pass from Alejandro Pozo. He breathed a huge sigh of relief when Benzema tried to finish off instead of picking the unmarked Sergio Asensio and Marko Dmitrovic ducked well for a good save.
Two minutes later, Pozo got into trouble again with Marcelo pulling away from him into space and crossing deep into Benzema who headed Dmitrovic. Madrid celebrated but the flag was raised.
In the ninth minute Marcelo returned to center from the left where he was operating as a winger in Madrid’s 3-5-2. Casemiro fell to a challenge from Rafa Soares but the VAR ruled that he had not knocked down the Brazilian.
Eibar were lucky to be in a deal and their first opportunity came when Anaitz Arbilla tried to catch Thibaut Courtois from his own field, but he strayed from the goal.
The next bold effort came from Asensio and he went back to the crossbar. Eibar’s defenders were waiting for a center, but Asensio went for the goal and hit the wood.
Then Pozo stepped forward and jumped at Nacho before launching a deflected shot. The Madrid defender was one card away from missing the Clásico next weekend and was in no mood to rush before the defender’s bankruptcy.
Eibar’s biggest threat usually comes from 20-year-old Bryan Gil, but he had to chase Lucas Vázquez more than the madridista chased him. He was also booked for a jerk on his rival’s shirt and almost saw a second for a foul on Casemiro.
In the 36th minute, Madrid returned to have the ball in the back of the net and again it was ruled out of play. Isco’s cross shot was a backward heel pierced by Dmitrovich’s legs who already had his hand up when he fell backward victim to Asensio’s nutmeg.
In the third moment of the question, Madrid finally got ahead. Casemiro lost the ball in midfield, but recovered it in an instant and passed a killer ball to Asensio, whose first touch sent him into space from where he slashed his shot over Dmitrovic’s dive.
Gil was limping now and after a talk with the Eibar coach, José Luis Mendilibar, in the band Takashi Inui began to warm up. He entered the end at the restart. Pape Diop forced Courtois to make another stop, but Madrid more than deserved their lead at halftime.
Asensio had been the man in the first half and after the restart he came within a second with another curling shot from afar that Dmitrovich flipped over.
Benzema had the next chance with a precise cross from Lucas, but he headed harmlessly over the crossbar.
Despite their dominance, Madrid were still just 1-0 up and with the rain now falling diagonally, Courtois’ error nearly tied the game.
Lucas returned the ball to the goalkeeper, who thought he had the measure, but caught the rhythm in the wind and passed him. He recovered by sliding to hook it clear and ending up tangled in the back of his own net, but still with his clean blade intact.
Casemiro had the ball back in the net, only for the flag to be raised again. Casemiro passed the ball into the net from outside the area but substitute Sergio Arribas had been offside.
Benzema finally got the second reassuring from a perfectly weighted cross from Vinicius.
He has now scored 187 goals for Real Madrid and is the fourth top scorer in the club’s history.
He only has Raúl, Alfredo di Stefano and Cristiano Ronaldo ahead. It was a good way to enter the biggest week of Madrid’s season when they face Barcelona between home and away games with Liverpool. They have a better chance with Benzema in this form.
