Reaction and predictions: the UEFA Champions League group stage draw

[ad_1]

Among all the awards that Bayern Munich won, we had an important event in European football: the draw for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. With the Bavarians ready to defend their title, the question now is who will Bayern have to play against to get there?

In this article, we look at each group in the competition and make our predictions about who will advance.

Group A

Jake fenner

There goes my hope that this will be easy for Bayern. It’s going to be a fun group, with two teams clearly passing, but imagine if we had this group last year and we had to face an angry Erling Haaland …

one. Bayern Munich two. Atletico Madrid 3. Lokomotiv Moscow 4. RB Salzburg

Josh Tobolt

I mean, I think with the exception of Atlético de Madrid, this should be full of high-scoring matches for Bayern. Bayern have traditionally done well against lower-level teams and Lokomotiv should be no different. As for RB Salzburg, as my partner above said, I am glad that we are not playing against an RB Salzburg led by Erling Haaland.

1. Bayern Munich 2. Atlético de Madrid 3. RB Salzburg 4. Lokomotiv Moscow

Evan vanderpool

Bayern and Atlético are the best dogs obviously and will progress. Make no mistake though, it is quietly a very tough bunch.

1. Bavaria 2. Athletic 3. Lokomotiv Moscow 4. Salzburg

B Group

Jake fenner

This is a difficult group. It is my second choice for the group of death, but my choice comes much later. I don’t expect a good result for the Germans in this group, and both Shakhtar and Inter made it to the semi-finals of the Europa League. This will be a bumpy ride all the way.

one. Real Madrid two. Inter de Milan 3. Shakhtar Donetsk 4. Borussia Mönchengladbach

Josh Tobolt

I think this group will be full of wild card locations. I don’t see a well defined number one team. Real Madrid is Real Madrid, but it has also had problems in the past with German teams that are not called Bayern. Inter played well, but drowned in the final of the European Cup. However, I do see some quality matches.

1. Borussia Mönchengladbach 2. Real Madrid 3. Inter Milan 4. Shakhtar Dontesk

Evan vanderpool

Another dense group, Shakhtar are not fun to play and Gladbach will be a hard out. Real Madrid and Inter Milan will advance, Inter have a tremendous squad and will be a force in the tournament.

one. Inter de Milan 2. Real Madrid 3. Mönchengladbach 4. Shakhtar Donetsk

Group C

Jake fenner

This is tough. Not because there is no clear winner, but because of that battle for second place. Assuming City are going to win this group, it could see any of the three remaining teams reach the next round. I imagine that most of the people will go with Porto, but I will go with the South of France team.

1. Man City 2. Marseille 3. Porto 4. Olympiacos

Josh Tobolt

Clear cut No. 1, the rest is honestly a roll of the dice. However, I think Marseille is the most talented of the others.

one. Manchester city 2. Marseille 3. Porto 4. Olympiakos

Evan vanderpool

This group is at stake. Manchester City will obviously pass quickly and second place will be Porto or Olympiakos.

1. Manchester City 2. Porto 3. Olympiakos 4. Marseille

Group D

Jake fenner

Wow … this is going to be a barn burn. If Ajax could retain all their youth talent from a few years ago, I imagine it would be a safe bet here. But give me the Scousers and the Bergamasco for this one.

one. Liverpool two. Atalanta 3. Ajax 4. Midtjylland

Josh Tobolt

Ajax has screwed in this grouping. With the exodus of all their young elite talents, this team is nowhere near the quality of years past. Atalanta is looking to build on its club record performance from last year.

1. Liverpool 2. Atalanta 3. Ajax 4. Midtjylland

Evan vanderpool

This is a hell of a group and the worst possible draw for Ajax, it will be difficult to compete with Liverpool and Atalanta for the first two places. Atalanta vs. Liverpool x2 will be essential.

1. Liverpool 2. Atalanta 3. Ajax 4. Midtjylland

Group E

Jake fenner

I’ll be half asleep for these. It is such a heavy group that I doubt that Lampard or Lopetegui will line up their first teams. In terms of who ends up where, give me Sevilla on top just for the sake of doing it.

1. Seville 2. Chelsea 3. Rennes Stadium 4. Krasnodar

Josh Tobolt

This is the lightest group of the top two of either group. All you have to decide is who is No. 1 and No. 2. I take Sevilla to the best Chelsea.

1. Sevilla 2. Chelsea 3. Stade Rennes 4. Krasnodar

Evan vanderpool

Soft group for the two best squads. Sevilla and Chelsea should progress easily.

1. Seville 2. Chelsea 3. Krasnodar 4. Stade Rennes

Group F

Jake fenner

Oooooooh … this should be fun. Bruges have great youth talent, Zenit is … interesting to say the least and then we have Dortmund and Lazio, who are doing well in their respective leagues. I expect a tough battle for second place, but I’ll just say that those Lazio-Zenit games would be just two teams trying to get past the right wing if there were fans in the stands.

1. Dortmund 2. Lazio 3. Zenit Saint Petersburg 4. Club Brugge

Josh Tobolt

Dortmund is playing really good. Haaland is BL’s No. 2 forward behind Lewy and Marco Reus is also healthy (again) so they are dangerous. Lazio are full of veteran talents who, if they can put it all together, they can make a deep run and I like that Brugge is this year’s dark horse to be Ajax 2018-2019.

1. Dortmund 2. Lazio 3. Club Brugge 4. Zenit Saint Petersburg

Evan vanderpool

This group is also quite open. Dortmund have to advance and the number 2 spot is really at stake for the other three teams. Dortmund and Lazio pass.

1. Dortmund 2. Lazio 3. Zenit 4. Bruges

Group G

Jake fenner

I don’t know if Leo and Cristiano have ever met in the group stage before this, but now is the time for the two to meet for the first time since Ronaldo left Spain. The two are obviously going to lead the group and since Barça is in ruins, I will give it to Juve.

one. Juventus two. Barcelona 3. Dynamo Kyiv 4. Ferencvaros

Josh Tobolt

LOL Messi and Ronaldo. The other two clubs have no chance. This will all come down to “Whose best player is he?” part 956.

1. Juventus 2. Barcelona 3. Dynamo Kyiv 4. Ferencvaros

Evan vanderpool

Messi and Ronaldo in the same group, enough said. Juve and Barça are one weight class or five above the rest of the group.

one. Juventus two. Barcelona 3. Dynamo Kyiv 4. Ferencvaros

Group H

Jake fenner

Now this is the perennial “Group of Death” per se. Frankly, I love it. Basaksehir, well, they won’t make it. But the other three squads? OMG, this will be fun. Will PSG face their final defeat well? How will Leipzig deal with the loss of Werner? Manchester United stop being the joke of the Premier League? Tune in to find out.

1. Paris-Saint German 2. RB Leipzig 3. Manchester United 4. Istanbul Basaksehir

Josh Tobolt

This group seems that UEFA made a cocaine blow. Obvious choice for the group of death here. My heart wants to say that Leipzig will make it, but it will be close now that they have been torn apart by transfers. But again, Manchester United have a garbage bottom line, so …

1. PSG 2. RB Leipzig 3. United manchester 4. Istanbul Basaksehir

Evan vanderpool

Hard pot. It should be an open race for the top three, I wouldn’t be surprised if no one is left out. Nagelsmann’s team and Manchester United are likely fighting for second place. Enjoy the Europa League again, Ole! PSG and Leipzig advance.

1. PSG 2. RB Leipzig 3. United manchester 4. Istanbul Basaksehir

It’s going to be a fun Champions League season. Let us know your predictions in the comments.
