Ms. Tangoba Abayage, the Upper East Regional Minister has commended the late former President Jerry John Rawlings for some important development projects in the North, Upper East and Upper West Regions of Ghana.
“I would like to say without fear of contradiction that he is one of the reasons why the North developed. Yes, we are still in the early stages, but he did a lot to get us where we are. “
Mrs. Abayage recalled the achievements of the late former President Rawlings after he signed a book of condolences on behalf of the chiefs and people of the Upper East region, inaugurated at the Regional Coordination Council (RCC).
He noted that Mr. Rawlings was instrumental in the areas of road infrastructure, electricity extension and telecommunications to the north sector, “When Rawlings was president, he was able to bring electricity from the south to the north. That was a huge and important contribution to the openness of the North.
“Other than that, he created the Upper West Region from the old Upper Region. His contribution to the North is enormous. We cannot write the history of the country without referring to it, “said the minister, who is also the parliamentary candidate for the central constituency of Navrongo.
She said: “His charisma was something you couldn’t take away from him. Even in his old age, he loves listening to Rawlings. He was an embodiment of greatness. Ghana is the loser with his sudden disappearance. “
Former President Rawlings died at the age of 73 on November 12, 2020 at Korle-Bu University Hospital in Accra after a brief illness.
He was the founder of the National Democratic Congress and the first president of the Fourth Republic to rule Ghana for 19 years.
Mr. Rawlings left behind a wife and four children.
