The Student Representative Council (SRC) of the University for Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has urged the institution’s students to limit the transport of physical cash and electronic devices on and around campus.
This follows recent reports of robbery and rape cases on and off campus.
In a statement issued and signed by its president, Prince Nartey Wade, the SRC said: “Several reports have been received about various incidents of rape and robbery on and off campus.”
“Two female students have been raped, according to reports; motorcycle thieves have been stealing money, phones and other devices belonging to students overnight. “
The SRC, therefore, urged students to limit the use of “physical cash and make use of mobile money services.”
The council further urged students who carry many electronic devices to “limit the number of these devices.”
He also advised students to “avoid texting or making phone calls while on the streets going to their respective destinations” and to “stay alert at all times.”
The statement went on to say that “SRC is making every effort to provide security personnel at strategic points to monitor these activities,” while encouraging students to notify their hostel security or the police immediately when “they notice that minors or other strangers wander or enter residential shelters. “
The SRC added that it is deeply saddened by the events that have happened to the students and “wants to assure the entire student body that urgent measures have been taken.”
