Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor is congratulated after an Old Firm-inspired performance

The Rangers will continue to ignore the “noise” surrounding claims that the Scottish Premiership title is theirs to lose after defeating Celtic, says manager Steven Gerrard.

A 1-0 win over rivals at Ibrox on Saturday put Gerrard’s team 19 points ahead on top.

However, the Rangers manager claimed the lead was just 10 points, with Celtic having three games in hand.

“Before this game, we were aware of the noise,” he said.

“But it’s my job to protect my players and we’re not going to gain anything or gain an advantage if we hear the noise and get involved in playing with it.

“We need to keep a group together and keep doing the right things. Everything we have done this season has put us in this position and we have to keep fighting to stay there.

“My reaction to the victory is that I am very proud, very happy and satisfied with the three important points. It extends our lead to 10 points where it is.”

The Rangers started the game on the back foot when Celtic started quickly knowing that a victory was crucial to eliminating the huge gap between the two sides.

And while Callum McGregor’s own goal after Nir Bitton’s red card was pivotal in the end, goalkeeper Allan McGregor’s heroic deeds in the first half provided a platform for the hosts to build on after the break.

The 38-year-old was inspired by the Rangers goal, in particular to ward off Leigh Griffiths with an acrobatic fingertip stop on the post.

“It’s a shame he’s almost as old as I am, because I’d love him to be my goalkeeper for many, many more years,” Gerrard said.

“A couple of saves in the first half were world class.

“We talk a lot about him after big games, he tells his own story. You’re talking about a club legend, a phenomenal goalkeeper.
