Club Querétaro manager Héctor Altamirano admitted to taking an unconventional route to learn new tactics to help his team: watching YouTube videos.
Altamirano, 43, is a coach for the first time in Liga MX after working as Celaya’s boss in the second division Expansion League between 2019 and 2020. Now in charge of Querétaro, Altamirano seeks to make the most of the opportunity. by his fellow miners and mentors seeking advice, including former Mexico national team boss Ricardo La Volpe, who posts videos of tactics he used for specific matches on the video platform.

Altamirano, a former right-back best known for his time at Santos Laguna, received 18 games from Mexico between 1999 and 2005. Despite his defensive position, Altamirano was known as a rather prolific scorer due to his penchant for fiery free kicks.
After retiring in 2012, he joined Querétaro as a youth instructor, moving up as a coach with the U-17 team and then as an assistant with the first division team. In 2018, Altamirano ventured out of Querétaro for his first professional job as a manager with Cimarrones de Sonora in the Mexican second division. Later he was assistant to the Costa Rican men’s team before returning to Mexico. Unable to find a premier job, he left for Celaya in 2019.
“I thought it would be easier [to find a Liga MX job] after training in the lower divisions, “Altamirano said.
After finally getting his chance, the Liga MX rookie says young coaches generally come under more scrutiny than veteran bosses, prompting him to seek the advice of others to gain ground. Altamirano was hired by Querétaro in October 2020, replacing another young manager, Alex Diego, 35, who was fired after four months in the position.
“We have to be realistic,” Altamirano said. “Those of us who are new, more things are required of us [than veteran managers]. I’m trying to show that we are ready. “
For Querétaro, the first returns are promising. After five games in the 2021 Guardians season, the team has nine points, ranks seventh in Liga MX and is in a prime position for a playoff spot. During the winter break, the signing of former Manchester United star Antonio Valencia boosted Altamirano’s team.
Valencia is not the first notable star the club has signed in recent memory, as Brazilian legend Ronaldinho played for the team from 2014 to 2015. In his first season with Querétaro, Valencia have already scored a goal and an assist.
