James Rodríguez has made extraordinary performances at Everton, playing on the right wing, but his national coach, Carlos Queiroz, has emphasized that this is the position in which his compatriot figures with Colombia.
Carlo Ancelotti’s move to put James on the wing surprised many but the Portuguese coach explained that his player feels comfortable in that position.
“I don’t know James just from his time at Everton,” Queiroz said.
“I knew him very well from Porto and from his previous coaches.
“Now he is playing better and training better.
“This is the tactic I was developing in the Copa América [with Colombia], where he knew the team and its football well.
At Everton he plays in the position in which he has played with us ”.
James struggled last season at Real Madrid, mainly due to injuries and Zinedine Zidane’s decision not to give him much playing time.
However, as Queiroz made clear, what the 29-year-old playmaker needs is consistency.
“Now, [he plays] more football and [has] less injured, “he added.
“With more consistency, it will be very good for [Colombia] too.”
James has already scored three goals and provided his teammates with two assists in his first four Premier League games.
With Everton at the top of the league table, Ancelotti praised his player’s skills and creativity in attack.
“His quality allows him to play with ease,” he said after Everton’s win over Brighton.
“His game is not complicated because when he has space he uses his quality to pass and when he does not have space because he is pressed, he makes simple passes.”
