Former President John Dramani Mahama has rebuked the Police Administration for failing to sanction some police officers who were caught in a viral video warning Ghanaians against any act of violence on Election Day.

In the viral video, an armed police officer was seen asking voters to go home after they cast their vote on December 7, 2020.

The police officer, who was wearing a brown uniform and hat, said that the elections were not about violence, so Ghanaians should not engage in acts of violence, otherwise they will be treated mercilessly by the police.

Speaking in two words, the officer said: “The election is not about violence. If you finish voting on Election Day, go home. Do not get carried away by violence because if you do, the police are willing to treat you without mercy.

In reaction to this, the former president described this as a threat and indiscipline.

According to him, the officers who were seen in the video should be punished because they acted unprofessionally.

He opined that the service has lost its confidence and professionalism because the ruling government has recruited its vigilante groups into the service.

Police after the video went viral admitted that the officers in the video are trained.

In a statement issued to announce the official uniforms for Election Day, the police said: “The people seen in the video are sworn officials of the Ghana Police Service, who participated in special operations of a march en route in the Upper East region. The brown uniform and headdress some of them wear are training clothes.

In view of the public inquiries into police uniforms, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. James Oppong-Boanuh, has ordered that police officers serving in the 2020 elections must wear traditional police uniforms, which are in the colors blue-black, black and police camouflage. “

Mr. Mahama reacted to this and expressed concern about the production of the uniforms and the companies that support them.

He was concerned that there had been a lack of transparency in this regard and called on the police service to be transparent with the Ghanaians.

Meanwhile, he has expressed fear that the ruling PNP will recruit some guards into the security services for its agenda.

He stated in an interview on CTV on Sunday, November 22, 2020, that the service should not allow the government to use them for its selfish interests.
