The former Blues winger hopes to see an exciting group of young forwards lead a Premier League charge in 2020-21

The idea of Christian Pulisic lining up alongside Timo Werner and Kai Havertz for Chelsea in 2020-21 is “terrifying” for Premier League rivals, states Pat Nevin.

The Blues have invested heavily in new recruits ahead of the new season, as Roman Abramovich has granted Frank Lampard license to make a number of important additions.

Exciting Germany internationals Werner and Havertz have been part of that process, with a prolific forward and talented playmaker hailing from RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen respectively.

Chelsea also acquired Hakim Ziyech from Ajax, while Mason Mount and Callum Hudson-Odoi were already on their books.

Pulisic is another offensive star with useful English soccer experience under his belt, with the United States international enjoying a productive debut campaign at Stamford Bridge in 2019-20.

It is expected to reach even greater heights this season, with Nevin among those hoping to see considerable firepower unleashed by Lampard.

The former blues winger said BBC Sport of ambition in West London: “You have the top two and Chelsea will be on their heels.

“It’s not just the fact that they’ve spent money, it’s the way they’ve done it – having Timo Werner and Kai Havertz to go with Christian Pulisic is kind of scary, but probably more for the next three or four seasons instead. of this because they will need to be installed.

“So they look good. Everyone knows that his problem has been defense, and the center position could still be one.

“A lot of people say that the goalkeeper is too, and he may be, but I don’t think that’s the reason why they conceded so many goals last season; that was a broader defensive issue.

“I have the feeling they can concede the same amount this season, but they will score a lot more.”

Another man with strong ties to Chelsea, former player and coach Ruud Gullit, is another who believes the Blues should set their sights above the fourth place they achieved in the 2019-20 season.

The Dutchman said: “It is clear that Chelsea are trying to break into the top two.

“They have made good signings but that still doesn’t mean anything. You never know how they will integrate.

“It’s the Premier League, a different league, a different rhythm, everything different. Is not easy.”

Lampard’s side will open their new campaign in Brighton on Monday.
