The Coalition of Teachers Aggrieved by Unpaid Legacy Arrears has challenged the government to release the names of teachers it claims have received their inherited arrears.

The group’s reaction follows recent comments by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has paid money owed to the teachers of the John Dramani Mahama administration to date.

In July 2020, the vice president took to Facebook and wrote: “The John Mahama government was not paying the arrears in promoting teachers. The government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has paid the arrears in the promotion of teachers. “

The vice president at the launch of the PNP manifesto reiterated the same claim and this has provoked a reaction from disgruntled teachers.

Coalition President Abdulai Muniru wants the Vice President and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to support such payments with evidence.

“How can the Vice President and the Director General of GES affirm that the government has cleared all the arrears? Members of this group are thus shocked to the core by hearing claims that we have been paid for all inherited arrears. We challenge the GES, the Comptroller and the General Accounting Department to urgently publish the beneficiaries of these arrears paid to prove their case ”.

The group also asks the President of the Republic of Ghana to “call the director of GES to order and order the settlement of these inherited arrears that he owes us without further delay.”

The country’s teacher unions have repeatedly threatened to lay down their tools due to the government’s failure to pay inherited arrears.

The arrears, which include more than two years of back pay and promotions, as well as assignments for some public school teachers, have sparked a series of demonstrations in the education sector.
