After Thomas Tuchel was officially fired by Paris Saint-Germain, we analyzed Opta’s best data from his time with the French champions.

Paris Saint-Germain have confirmed the departure of Thomas Tuchel in the middle of his third season with the French champions. The former Borussia Dortmund boss won two consecutive Ligue 1 titles and led PSG to the Champions League final last season.

But he has paid the price for a slow start to the 2020-21 season amid reports of problems behind the scenes.

We’ve used Opta’s stats to review Tuchel’s reign, with Mauricio Pochettino apparently set to replace him.

Tuchel and Emery have the same winning percentage

PSG’s dominance in Ligue 1 in its first two seasons means Tuchel leaves with a record that resembles that of his predecessor Unai Emery.

Tuchel had a history of 2.37 points per game in Ligue 1, which is exactly the same as Emery’s trademark and tied for the best in club history.

Among other recent PSG bosses, Laurent Blanc (2.35) was not far behind, although Carlo Ancelotti (2.14) did less well in an earlier stage of the club’s project.

Tuchel had a 75.6% top flight win rate (62 wins in 82 games). That’s PSG’s highest league win percentage, just above Emery (73.7).

However, once all competitions are taken into account, Tuchel ends up just behind the former Arsenal and Sevilla manager.

Emery had a PSG total win rate of 76.3 despite never reaching as far as Tuchel in the Champions League, while the German’s final grade was 74.8 percent.

Tuchel’s Portion of Unwanted History

PSG’s decision to fire Tuchel came after a 4-0 win over Strasbourg last week, making it a only the second Ligue 1 boss to be fired mid-season immediately after winning by at least four goals.

The other was Leonardo Jardim, who was later rehired by Monaco after Thierry Henry fought as his replacement.

Tuchel is the first head coach to be fired for a season despite being in the top three in Ligue 1 from another man who was the victim of a QSI sack at PSG: Antoine Kombouaré in the 2011-12 campaign.

PSG put them in, but Tuchel tops the loss lists

Only Blanc (173) took over more than 127 PSG games from Tuchel during the QSI era.

Under Tuchel, who could turn to superstars Neymar and Kylian Mbappé, PSG averaged 2.67 goals per game in Ligue 1.

That was the best league scoring record of any PSG coach in history, though Emery (2.74) scored higher than Tuchel (2.65) in all competitions.

Tuchel suffered 19 defeats, More than any boss since QSI took office in 2011.

Emery only lost 12 times in 114 gameswhile Blanc lost just 16 despite leading 46 more games than Tuchel.

Both Tuchel and Emery conceded 0.81 goals per game, down from the impressive 0.73 under Blanc’s leadership.

However, Blanc’s teams were less offensive, averaging 2.26 goals per game across all competitions, while under Ancelotti that figure was 1.99.
