The district executive director and PNP parliamentary candidate for the Pru West district in the Bono East region, Stephen Jalulah, has started the distribution of cashew seedlings to registered cashew farmers in the district, under the Sow to export and rural development (PERD).
The Executive Director, along with officials from the district Agricultural Department, is expected to distribute 100,000 seedlings to registered cashew farmers before the end of the year.
He said Peace FM’s correspondent, Kwabena Manu during the distribution that, the officers will train cashew farmers the procedures and general knowledge in cashew planting.
Hon Jalulah stated that officials will ensure that farmers follow all scientific protocols from Agric’s department, which he says will help cashew seedlings survive to fulfill their intended purpose.
He took the opportunity to challenge the farmers and people of Pru West to ensure that more than 100,000 cashew trees survived in the District each year.
He urged the beneficiaries to take proper care of the plantation by preventing it from burning, as it will go a long way toward helping pay for their neighborhood school fees and alleviating the financial burden on them.
The Export Plantation and Rural Development Program (PERD) is a decentralized National Tree Crop Program to promote rural economic growth and improve rural farmers’ family income by providing certified improved seedlings, extension services, business support and regulatory mechanisms.
To create a legacy towards the realization of the Ghana Beyond Aid Agenda, the Government of Ghana, through the joint effort of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, implemented the PERD program to develop nine (9) products basic chains namely cashew, coffee, cotton, coconut, citrus, oil palm, mango, rubber and shea through a decentralized system, the district executive director told farmers.
After receiving the seedlings, the farmers also praised President Akufo-Addo and his DCE for the good policies in place to support the country’s farmers.
