Atta Mills Institute founder Koku Anyidoho says the practice of protecting ‘thieves’ in the name of democracy is suffocating and highly concerning

According to him, people who commit crimes in government should not be protected because when they were ‘stealing’ or committing such crimes, they did not inform any member of the party.

He made it known when speaking in an interview with Accra-based ATV monitored by MyNewsGh.com.

The former undersecretary general of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) who spoke about Ghana’s democratic practice said the practice is not helping the country.

According to him, people go off with crimes only because their parties protect them and that is not good for the country.

“I am not saying that democracy does not help us. What I’m saying is that the way we are practicing it is suffocating us. This is because if someone is going to steal, they come to hide and all members of the group must protect them.

“In the meantime, when he was going to steal, he did not come to the party headquarters to inform us. After he was caught for stealing he comes to the party and we all have to support him. If you don’t support him” they will call you a traitor, you are a bad person, that’s what we’ve done to our democracy, ”he said.

He added that “we must transform our mentality so as not to allow criminals to hide behind political parties to loot and steal.”
