The Conference of Directors of Second Cycle Private Schools (CHOPSS) has welcomed the Manifesto of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as it includes private institutions in the implementation of the Free Secondary School Policy (SHS).

The Conference said: “We are particularly pleased that this has been captured as part of the promises of the NDC Manifesto.”

This was in a statement co-signed by Mr. Naphtali Kyei-Baffour, the CHOPSS Public Relations Officer and Joseph K. Dzamesi, the Secretary General, copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra.

He said that the initiative was the only way to solve the problem of access to secondary education, which
rise to the double track system, could be solved

“We believe that a public-private partnership of this nature is beneficial to the Ghanaian government, children and education entrepreneurs. This policy will protect many of the 335 private upper secondary schools in Ghana and protect more than 10,000 jobs in the private secondary education sector, ”the statement said.

The Manifesto would give Ghanaian children more options, as they could choose to attend a private school near them or a public school and also reduce pressure on the government in its attempt to build additional infrastructure for public schools.

He said that just as the government partnered with private health institutions to ensure the provision of easily accessible health care, it could do the same with private schools to allow students to enjoy the free SHS grant.

“We have private schools that have better facilities than public schools and, over the years, they have outperformed public schools,” the statement said.

“We also reject the attempt to suggest that it is unconstitutional for the government to partner with private schools to provide educational access to Ghanaian children.”

He said there were common ground that were absolutely constitutional, which could be reached to allow for partnerships with private secondary schools.

He called on the New Patriotic Party-led Administration and all other political parties to commit to working with CHOPSS to ensure private schools receive government partnerships to provide access and quality education to all children in Ghana.
