President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo yesterday opened 64 military apartments at the new Douala headquarters in Accra.

The project is part of a government-initiated barracks regeneration program in 2017 to address the housing challenges facing Ghanaian Armed Forces (GAF) personnel.

The apartments, which began work in August 2017, are the first set of buildings to be completed under the project.

They consist of four blocks, each with 16 floors of two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and standard sanitary facilities.

Efforts

President Akufo-Addo said in the past three years that the government had worked diligently to improve GAF conditions to allow them to carry out their functions more efficiently.

He said similar accommodation projects were nearing completion in the Air Force, the Six Infantry Battalion in Tamale and other garrisons.

He urged the Military High Command to ensure that the facilities are maintained so that they can withstand the passage of time.

He also advised the occupants of the flats to protect themselves against the fire outbreaks, which had been affecting both the office and the residential accommodation for the GAF in recent times.

He announced that the grass would soon be cut for work in the second phase of the Burma camp road rehabilitation project.

COVID-19 fight

On the COVID-19 pandemic, the President said: “I am proud of your exceptional diligence and vigilance in ensuring that the protocols and restrictions I described are followed, especially during the three-week partial closure of Accra, Kumasi, Tema and Kasoa. “

He said the country had also noted the strengthening of relations between the military and citizens during the period that led to the cleaning of dirt, the disinfection of markets and the provision of water and other basic services for the needy and vulnerable. .

He reminded military personnel to continue to observe physical distancing and improved hygiene protocols while doing their homework.

Investment

Defense Minister Mr. Dominic Nitiwul said the government had so far invested GH ¢ 680 million in the Barracks Regeneration Program and praised the President for his bold initiative in launching the program.

He said that currently 642 four-bedroom, 12-story, four-story and two-bedroom units, as well as other ongoing infrastructure development in the country to provide accommodation for GAF staff and redevelopment of the Military Academy and Training School at Teshie in a modern Military Academy.

He said 10 additional blocks, totaling 40 two-bedroom units, had been completed in Tamale and would be delivered to the GAF in July this year.

Professionalism

For his part, the Chief of Defense Staff, Lt. Gen. Obed Boamah Akwa, said that since taking office as President, the government has continued to equip the GAF, allowing them to carry out their respective tasks in a manner that is effective.
