Information Minister Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah says that the nine-page response from the Office of the President to the issues raised by former special prosecutor Martin Amidu in his resignation letter was intended to set the record straight.
According to the Ofoase-Ayirebi lawmaker, the Office of the President issued the nine-page statement to address the reasons that allegedly forced Martin Amidu to resign to ensure that all truths are in the public domain.
In an interview on Joy FM’s Morning Show, the former television journalist said that the response from the Office of the President is not an agenda to blame the former special counsel as some people speculate.
However, he pointed out that Martin Amidu was appointed as Special Prosecutor to control corruption in the country due to the respect that the Akufo-Addo government has for him; therefore, it would be inappropriate for the government itself to falsely accuse him.
“It is important to make it clear that we have not tried to blame Mr. Amidu’s door, we have not done so,” he stressed.
“Mr. Amidu, even before communicating his letter of resignation to the president, had put a document in the public domain that seeks to give the impression that; firstly, he was denied support for the running of his office and, secondly, his office was interfered with.
“These were the two main reasons he resigned. We respect Mr. Martin Amidu but we respectfully disagree with these two arguments that he put in the public domain, ”he stated.
Martin Amidu submitted a letter on Monday to resign from his position as Special Prosecutor following his appointment in 2018.
According to Mr. Amidu, President Akufo-Addo was trying to turn him into a “poodle” of his government and, since [Amidu] If he is an honorable man and a person of integrity, he will refuse to be compromised by partisan influence.
The president, within 24 hours of receiving the letter, accepted the resignation of Mr. Amidu, popularly known as Citizen Vigilante, and subsequently issued a detailed response to the concerns he raised.
In the nine-page response, the Presidency categorically denied all the accusations made by the Special Prosecutor to explain why he wants to resign.
According to the Presidency, the government did not interfere with Mr. Amidu’s work, nor did it refuse to provide the necessary logistics for the operation of the Special Prosecutor’s Office.
The Office of the President revealed that it was rather Mr. Amidu who rejected adaptations, funds and other government equipment for the proper functioning of the Office.
Following the government’s response, some people are of the opinion that the Office of the President only wants to blame Mr. Amidu for the failure of the Special Prosecutor’s Office to fulfill its mandate.
The Minister of Information, however, denied the assertion, stating that, “for the purposes of the public record, it is important to declare the facts as they are and, subsequently, the public can make its judgment.”
