The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has commissioned the newly built Naval Training Command at Nutekpor, in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region.

According to President Akufo-Addo, the Command Center, which has been the vision of several Naval Chiefs of Staff, “will host all the training schools of the Navy, under a unified command, to improve human development resources in the Navy and other stakeholders in the maritime industry ”.

When commissioning the Project on Tuesday, October 20, 2020, the President explained that the increase in economic activities in the maritime environment, especially in the oil and gas and fishing sectors, and the security challenges that accompany them, demand the presence of a well-trained maritime force for the purposes of offering enhanced protection.

Given that piracy and armed robbery in the Gulf of Guinea pose major threats to national and regional maritime activities, he noted that “therefore, we need all naval officers and sailors to be equipped with creative solutions to deal with present and future maritime security challenges, and anticipating criminal actors at sea “, adding that” this is the basis of the Government’s support, through the Ministry of Defense, for the establishment of this Naval Instruction Command. “

The Command will serve as the nerve center of the Navy’s training doctrine, with the seven major schools under the Command, namely the School of Maritime Operations, the School of Supply Application, the School of Marine Engineering and Electrical Application, the School of Basic Leadership Training, the School of Recruitment School, School of Special Forces Training and School of Diving, which provide numerous points of contact to instill the fundamental values ​​of the Navy.

“The schools would also impart the knowledge and skills required of naval personnel, so that they can achieve appropriate professional standards and maintain operational readiness in accordance with Navy operating procedures,” he added.

Additionally, President Akufo-Addo stressed that the schools, operating under the Command, will be equipped to take advantage of technology and will use new training methodologies to enhance learning and achieve greater efficiencies in line with the Government’s technology and digitization agenda.

Phase one

The facilities that have been completed and ready for use, in Phase One of this Project, are the Command Headquarters, the School of Maritime Operations, the Recruit Training School, the accommodation blocks for instructors and students, library , medical center and mini mosque.

All of these and other facilities, intended for construction, are located on a one hundred fourteen (114) acre lot, which has been fenced off to protect against invaders. In addition, the Ministry of Defense is in the process of securing two hundred and fifty (250) acres of land on the outskirts of this Command for the construction of an outdoor shooting range to support training.

President Akufo-Addo noted that, once the rest of the schools are successfully completed, “the Training Command will become a maritime training center of excellence, attracting trainees from other security services and maritime stakeholders from inside and outside Ghana, in accordance with the principles of the Yaoundé Code of Conduct. “

The President continued: “We believe that reorganizing the Armed Forces, in general, and the Navy, in particular, is the surest way to support the principles of the Code of Conduct, which requires providing resources to the Armed Forces in the Gulf States. of Guinea to improve collaboration on joint operations and information exchange. We, in the Government, therefore, would give the maximum support and we would ensure that the construction of the remaining schools begins in earnest so that the Command is fully operational. ”

Expressing the appreciation of the Government and the people of Ghana to the Chiefs and the people of the Agave Traditional Area for the full support they have given to this project, President Aku, adding that “I have been told that the medical center will serve as the first port of call for all Nutekpor residents and surrounding communities ”.
