Prepare for the increasing difficulties, that is the warning of the minority leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu to the Ghanaians, after the reading of the budget on Friday, March 12, 2021.
According to Iddrisu, the 2021 budget does not present hope for the Ghanaian worker, because the introduction of new taxes by the government in the budget statement is a clear indication that the prices of basic products will rise.
The government is trying to introduce four new taxes and increase existing ones this year.
Some of the levies in question are the COVID-19 health levy, the oil levy, the sanitation and pollution levy, as well as the financial sector cleanliness levy.
These, according to the Acting Finance Minister Mr. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, are to address the difficulties facing the economy due to the COVID-19 outbreak and the cleanup of the financial sector.
Iddrisu, who was speaking to Accra-based Citi Fm, lashed out at the Akufo-Addo government for trying to increase the ESLA tax.
According to him, while opposing it, the NPP described the ESLA tax as an annoying tax, but now enjoy it as a credible source of revenue.
“There is no hope. Ghanaians must prepare for greater hardship and greater suffering because it means there will be oil increases with the ESLA that they described a few years ago as an annoying tax. But they have come back to it as a credible source of income, which is a lack of principles “.
