Premier League clubs have voted to allow short-term contract extensions until the end of the season for players whose offers are slated to end on June 30, 2020.

The suspension of football in England due to the coronavirus pandemic has delayed the 2019-20 season from March.

Authorities in the country have always emphasized the desire to end professional leagues on the field, but with the game unable to resume before June 1, problems arose regarding the expiration of contracts.

Although the Premier League clubs recently discussed for the first time the possibility of ending the campaign prematurely, the 20 teams have voted to return to play as soon as it is safe and are working to achieve a return on June 12 .

The English football season generally ends at the end of June and the players’ contracts are aligned with this, therefore some clubs were in a position where they could see them lose players without any fault before the calendar ended.

However, after a shareholder meeting on Monday, all Premier League clubs have agreed to allow mutual extensions in the short term until the end of the season.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said: “What we decided to do is ensure as far as possible that the clubs complete the season with the same team they had available before the campaign suspension. Players can extend their contracts beyond June 30 until the end of the season, but must be agreed by both parties. “

Clubs and players have been given until June 23 to reach agreements to extend the agreements.

Several other top flights in Europe are looking to re-launch the campaign soon.

While the Bundesliga games will begin this weekend, Portugal’s suspension will end on June 4, the Spanish League expects to return to action starting June 12, and Italian Serie A will return the following day. However, people like France, the Netherlands and Belgium have already decided to rule out the rest of the period and will resume next season.
