Power FM host Oheneba Boamah Bennie, who was arrested by the Ghana Police Service on December 14, has been released from police custody.

He was detained at the Headquarters of the Police Criminal Investigation Department after attending an invitation from the police to collaborate in the investigations into offensive language and threats he had issued against the president, Akufo-Addo.

He was released at 5:15 pm on Wednesday December 16 when the police finally gave in to pressure from his lead attorney, attorney Francis-Xavier Sosu, to send him to court or to grant him bail.

According to the Human Rights and Public Interest Lawyer, keeping his client beyond the stipulated 48 hours was a violation of article 14 of the 1992 Constitution.

He further insisted that holding the journalist in detention beyond the constitutional requirement also amounted to an abuse of power by the Ghana Police Service officers and therefore demanded that bail be set for his client.

The lawyer Sosu insisted that the crime in question was a misdemeanor and had to do with an alleged statement that the police already had and did not require any complex investigation.

The Police that detained the presenter for accusations of offensive conduct leading to a breach of public order under articles 207 and 208 of the Penal and Other Crimes Law of 1960, Law 29, admitted him on bail with the sum of 100,000 with two bonds.

You must report to the Police on December 17, 2020.
