Power FM host Oheneba Boamah has been warned for offensive conduct and publication of false news by the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service.
The CID department, in a statement, accused the announcer of insulting and threatening President Akufo-Addo.
Some members of the Democratic National Congress picketed the CID headquarters earlier that day to demand his release from police custody.
The presenter’s attorney, Kojogah Adawudu, speaking with Emefa Apawu on Joy FM’s News Night program, said his client is still in police custody.
According to him, while responding to an invitation from the CID, his client was subjected to several questioning by the police about some statements he had made on Power FM during the 2020 elections.
However, the police could not tell them which of his statements were false and which of his conduct was offensive.
“My client is being investigated under the Provision of Section 207 for offensive conduct and also under Section 208 for posting false news. As for the news that is false, we have yet to know the news that is false, and then what conduct amounts to offensive conduct, they haven’t told us yet, ”he said Monday.
He said a video his client’s police showed them only showed his client commenting on the violence that followed the casting of the votes.
“He is expressing an opinion, his feelings about what happened during this election,” the attorney said.
According to him, additional audio was played that Oheneba Boamah denied knowledge of.
He exercised his right to remain silent according to his lawyer and was later asked to write a statement.
Attorney Adawudu testified that after several hours of waiting in the CID office without clear instructions from the police, Oheneba Boamah was transferred to the central police station where he believes his client is currently located.
“They refused to tell us where they were taking him. Until it got so hot they said they were going to Central. So we believe that he has gone to Central and my colleague, the deputy elected by Medina, Sosu, has gone to Central and says that he is in the striking force. So he is detained there, ”he said.
According to the lawyer, if his client is not released after 48 hours, he will take the matter to court.
“We will go to ask for bail. The police have the right to give us a bond within 48 hours. If they refuse and deny it, after 48 hours we will go to court and ask for bail. They can’t hold it after 48 hours. “
Speaking with the Public Relations Officer of the CID of the Police, DSP Julia Obeng, confirmed that indeed the presenter had been invited to the headquarters of the CID of the Police for questioning, was warned and then arrested to help in future investigations.
However, he declined to discuss his exact whereabouts and the reasons for his arrest, citing national security concerns over secrecy.
Meanwhile, Oheneba Boamah is doing well, according to DSP Julia Obeng.
