Former Communications Minister Dr. Omane Boamah urged the Akufo-Addo-led administration to publish an official vaccine implementation plan as the country prepares to receive 19.5 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines by the end of June. .
According to him, the lack of a clear plan for the launch of the vaccine would be detrimental to the efficiency of the immunization program that the government might want to undertake, since citizens who qualify to be vaccinated could be lost.
“It is also concerning because it deprives stakeholders – doctors, nurses, pharmacists, policy and public health experts, journalists, and civil society organizations – the opportunity to provide input, ask vital questions, and institute monitoring and evaluation systems to guide the process if they want to, ”he said in a Facebook post.
His urgent call for a vaccine implementation plan comes after the Director General of the Ghana Standards Authority, Dr. Alexander Dodoo, revealed that children, pregnant women, people with allergies and underlying health conditions, and the elderly will not be vaccinated against the new coronavirus. .
Speaking in the JoyNews news archive on Saturday, the head of the Ghana Standards Authority said: “Normally, to begin with, children will not be included, they are more protected and they do not transmit the virus. Those with allergies, those with underlying health problems, those whose immune systems appear to be compromised will not be vaccinated. “
According to Dr. Boamah, such a revelation is shocking, as people who are excluded from the immunization program, as Dr. Alexander Dodoo said, should be prioritized to avoid further deaths.
“Mr. President, are you not within the domain of prioritized individuals in the United States of America?
“Why should mother Ghana deprive people with underlying medical conditions and the protection of the elderly if there are no contraindications (ie medical reasons not to administer the vaccine)?
“Respectfully, have we not heard time and again from you and other government officials that comorbidities contribute to Covid-induced deaths? More questions than answers, ”he said.
Therefore, he asked the government to avoid further mistakes in the fight against Covid-19 by publishing a vaccination plan.
“Mr. President, these are the reasons why we need to publish the vaccination plan for the sake of transparency and fairness as we prepare to vaccinate Ghanaians against Covid-19,” he concluded.
