The minor political parties that contested the recently concluded elections have asked Mr. John Mahama, the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to acknowledge the defeat and congratulate Akufo-Addo, the president-elect.
The parties said it had become crucial for Mahama to accept that he lost the election and to congratulate the winner, not only to protect the peace and stability of the country, but also to preserve and affirm the country’s enviable democratic credentials.
Alhaji Mohammed Frimpong, the secretary general of the National Democratic Party, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency in a canceled march to appeal to the NDC to stop the ongoing protests, said the 2020 elections would go down in history as the most recent elections. transparent and peaceful. in the fourth republic, contrary to the claims of some NDC supporters.
“It is therefore surprising that NDC Mr. Mahama finds it difficult to accept the unequivocal verdict of the people of Ghana issued by the Election Commission, which has been corroborated by the Coalition of National Election Observers and endorsed as free and fair by Organizations from civil society, the European Union Observer Mission, the ECOWAS Observer Mission and indeed by the International Community, “he said.
He said that the NDC was the only party that believed that the 2020 elections were not credible or transparent and that the Ghana Constitution and Cl 127 provided them with a remedy to seek redress in the courts rather than persistent protests.
He said that the party’s stance of projecting violence and protests incites its supporters, who threaten the peace and tranquility of the country and should be condemned from all angles.
“The NDC cannot promote itself as a democratic party, and yet it does not use a democratic process to resolve its grievance. Only the courts can grant the reparations that the party seeks, and not continued illegal protests.”
The parties appealed to Mr. Mahama and the NDC leadership to call their supporters to order and go to court to challenge the outcome of the 2020 elections if they were not satisfied with the results.
He called on the security agencies to be resolute and protect the state and safeguard the peace of the country from any unfavorable protests, and urged the NDC party to appeal to put the national interest before personal interest.
The parties are the People’s Convention Party, the Peoples’ National Convention, LPG, the Progressive Peoples, the National Democratic Party, the Great Consolidated People’s Party, the Ghana Trade Union Movement, the United Freedom Party, APC and the Independent presidential candidate.
The Electoral Commission declared on December 9 the candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party as the winner of the presidential elections, obtaining 51.302%, while the candidate John Dramani Mahama of the NDC 47.359%.
