Political leaders have flocked to the residence of former President Jerry John Rawlings to sympathize with his family after his passing.
President Akufo-Addo, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, Chief of Staff Madame Akosua Frema Osei and the chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Freddie Blay and other prominent party members have visited the former statesman’s wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman. Rawlings and the rest of the family to offer their condolences.
Addressing the family, the president expressed his deep regret for the death of the former president, whom he described as very dynamic.
Considering the fact that Rawlings was a notable statesman of the country, he pleaded with the family to accept the government’s proposal to give the late former president a proper burial.
He added that it is vital that the State play a key role in their expulsion.
Speaking on behalf of the family, the former president’s daughter, Zenator Agyeman-Rawlings, said the family will work closely with the Office of the Chief of Staff to ensure the family-government program for her father’s burial is well coordinated.
The president at the Accra International Conference Center (AICC) is expected to sign a book of condolences that has been opened in the name of former president Jerry John Rawlings.
Mr. Rawlings, 73, passed away at Korle-Bu University Hospital on Thursday after a brief illness.
The death of the former president has caused a stir not only in Ghana but around the world.
Meanwhile, the Volta regional chair of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fritz Baffoe, and the presidential candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party, Akua Donkor, visited Rawlings’ residence to sympathize with the family.
NDC leader and presidential candidate John Mahama has yet to visit the family, as he is currently leading a party committee meeting to consider appropriate steps to honor the memory of the former president.
