Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has dismissed claims that the current surge in coronavirus cases in the country is due to ongoing political activities.
As the country prepares for this year’s general elections, concerns have been raised that political activities, including demonstrations and health walks, may be causing the virus to spread.
But the deputy from Offoase Ayeribi disagrees, arguing that government data suggests rather that the increase in cases is occurring in closed work spaces and offices.
“The data doesn’t support that, if it’s true, then there should be a generalized flow in all these regions where all these political activities are taking place.
“The data shows us that we have more problems in offices and workplaces where we have closed activity,” he added.
The Information Minister called on security agencies to enforce the use of masks and other coronavirus prevention protocols.
Meanwhile, all districts in the Greater Accra region continue to see an increase in cases.
The head of the Ghana Health Service’s Disease Surveillance Department, Dr. Asiedu Bekoe, revealed that most of the cases in the Greater Accra region were recorded in Ayawaso West, but clarified that it was due to the majority of the region’s test centers are located in that district.
