Professor Yaw Benneh, a cleaner who works at the University of Ghana law house, has narrated to the police how he killed his teacher.
CID director general COP Ken Isaac Yeboah told reporters at a press conference on Friday that James Nana Womba’s motive was to steal, but the professor was killed because he resisted.
According to him, according to forensic evidence gathered at the crime scene, the cleaner was subjected to further questioning and collapsed and confessed.
COP Isaac Yeboah, who introduced Mr. Nana Womba to the media, said the suspect told investigators that he was the mastermind behind the professor’s murder.
“Initially, he mentioned the names of some suspects, but he just changed that statement and now he has mentioned someone else, so now they go to the crime scene. In fact, he has admitted that he did commit the crime with someone else, “he told reporters.
He said that Nana Womba explained that this was because he had a duplicate of the professor’s key, “which the professor didn’t know he had, so along with the other person he mentioned, they murdered him.”
Police officer Isaac Yeboah said the suspect told them that the idea was to rob him but that the professor did not give in as expected, so they hit him with an iron bar.
Then they tied him up, gagged him, until he died.
James Nana Womba is said to have taken the CPU from a desktop computer in the house, which he hid in a septic tank.
He also took two mobile phones and an amount of ¢ 450, but police say some items have since been recovered.
Professor Emmanuel Yaw Benneh was murdered in his Adjirgano mansion, although his body was found three days later.
According to reports, there were no signs of a break-in or forced entry into the house.
COP Isaac Ken Yeboah said the motive that has been gathered so far during the investigation was that the suspects intended to steal some money from the deceased.
“He’s given us a clue as to where he sold some of the items, so we’re following him right now,” he said.
