The Central Regional Police Command has reacted to allegations made by popular Ghanaian comedian Benson Boateng, known in the entertainment industry as Funny Face, that he was beaten when he was arrested by Kasoa police for illegally firing a weapon.
In a statement issued by the Central Regional Police Command and signed by Irene Serwah Oppong, the Deputy Superintendent of Police said: “The attention of the Central Regional Police Command has been drawn to a video that has gone viral on social media with a caption ‘I was brutally beaten by the Kasoa police and arrested’ ”.
The statement mentioned that in said video, two policemen were seen trying to arrest the comedian, who was resisting arrest.
In the video, the comedian narrated that he was brutalized by the police during his arrest in Kasoa, but did not state the true facts of the case.
According to the police statement, on Monday, February 8, 2021, the Millennium City Police Divisional Command received a complaint from Former WO 1 Charles Akwasi Owusu of Millennium City that, on the same date at 3:30 p.m., Funny Face was to his drinking spot and there was a misunderstanding between the comedian and the bar attendant, James Akariboro, leading to a fight after which Funny Face ran to his car for a pump action pistol and fired four warning shots .
He said police officers were ordered to arrest the comedian, who resisted and moved toward his car, apparently to draw his gun, as he was reported to have done against the author’s bar attendant. He added that the arresting officers applied the minimum force required to make the arrest and sent him to the Millennium City Police Station, where he was detained and released on police bail the next day. The comedian is under investigation for firing firearms without authorization.
In the comedian’s statement submitted to police on February 8, 2021, he claimed that he was assaulted by James Akariboro, who was also arrested, detained, and granted bail for police investigation.
“The Central Regional Police Command is assuring the general public that an investigation into the alleged police brutality against the comedian will be conducted and due process will be followed,” the statement said.
