Ashanti regional police commander COP Kwasi Mensah Duku has said that the regional police have started investigations into the recent armed robbery attacks in the region and will soon arrest the suspects.
He told the media on Friday October 23, 2020 in Kumasi.
COP Mensah Duku noted that the Regional Police has sufficient evidence against the culprits and assured the general public that it will soon take action against them.
“We have taken a very serious view on what is happening and we have come a long way and hopefully I believe that in the next few weeks ahead, we will be able to catch those who have been committing those crimes in Kumasi. We have enough evidence against some suspects, but you know I cannot reveal their identity now, but I just want to assure you that we are very strong and firm on the ground, and very soon, you will hear from us, ”COP Mensah said Duku.
For his part, Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah urged residents to be patient when offering information to the police so they can do their job.
Mr. Osei-Mensah said: “They should get the basis by which they can make the arrest and some of them may take some time, some may take weeks, some may take days, some will take months, etc. Please give them time to work on it and also be silent about any information you have given them. ”
In addition, he assured the residents of the region of their safety and protection before, during and after the elections.
“Everyone in the region must be sure that their security and protection will be intact before, during and after the elections and even until the end of the year so that we can enjoy a very peaceful Christmas and New Year.”
In addition, he warned the criminals against disturbing the peace in the region.
“We also send a word of warning to all those who do not like peace or do not like that we have it. The way the law enforcement agencies have behaved to date, I am very proud of them. I have said it several times, I am the luckiest regional minister in the whole country because I have very competent and professional security personnel who are always ready to work and deliver, and deliver successfully, ”he said.
The minister and police comments come after a student was robbed of 5,000 GHS at Atinka Junction in Ahodwo in the Kumasi metropolis.
The incident, which occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 21, 2020, follows the robbery and shooting of a Chinese man near the same location within the metropolis.
The thieves are alleged to have escaped with the money on a motorcycle.
Narrating the incident to Class91.3FM’s Ashanti regional correspondent, Elisha Adarkwah, the mobile money vendor, whose store the victim had visited for business transactions before the robbery occurred, noted that: “We were here this afternoon, a time, a guy approached us; because of what happened yesterday [shooting and robbing of a Chinese man], we could not allow the person to be by our side.
“So, we told the person to go a little further. He said he was from Fidelity Bank and that he would come to withdraw money, so he was with a plastic bag. We didn’t know what was in it so he said he was waiting for someone to send the money for me to take it back. So, he was there waiting, there was a motorcyclist who passed by him and went around and took the money and left. According to the guy, the guy said 5000 GHS. ”
The armed robbers were said to be wearing green pants similar to army colors and sitting on a motorcycle heading in the direction of Kaase Road.
Residents of the area have expressed their disappointment with the police regarding the security situation in the area, especially after Tuesday’s incident involving the Chinese man.
“We are very disappointed in the police. After the incident they were here, they just rushed here and we begged them to send a patrol team or set up a police checkpoint. But all they said was that they can’t come and set up a checkpoint just because of us. We were very disappointed. ”
The Adiebeba police command has launched investigations into the matter.
The incident involving the Chinese man took place in Ahodwo in the Kumasi metropolis when the victim went to buy a recharge card from a provider.
The four unmasked attackers traveled on two motorcycles to commit the crime.
Narrating the incident to Elisha Adarkwah, the card seller explained that he only realized that the men had four and two separate motorcycles after they shot the Chinese man and sped off.
He said, “I came this morning and opened my store.
“I saw Chinese men, they parked on the other side, so they crossed the street to come and buy me Vodafone credit.
“So when they came in he told me he was buying GHS100 so I took the credit and was about to give it to him and he had this little bag under his armpit.
“I saw a certain man in the back, he took the bag from the Chinese’s armpit, when the Chinese turned to look at the person who did that, the man shot him.”
However, a nephew of the victim indicated that the bag, which the thieves took, did not contain money, except documents.
Since then, the victim has been taken to hospital, but is said to be in critical condition.
