The France international’s fellow World Cup winner admits that a proven player at the highest level has disappointed since returning to England.
Paul Pogba has been frustrated since returning to Manchester United, admits fellow World Cup winner Frank Leboeuf, with “too much trouble around” a France international who lacks consistency.
Great things were expected of the 27-year-old midfielder when he returned to Old Trafford in a record transfer of £ 89 million ($ 110 million) during the summer of 2016.
However, Pogba has made as many headlines for his failures as for his successes, and many have questioned his appetite and commitment to the Kingdom cause.
That has seen talk of transfer on a regular basis, with moves to Juventus and Real Madrid debated once again before the coronavirus pandemic casts doubt on the big-money deals.
Leboeuf acknowledges that his compatriot needs to rediscover a spark, with Bruno Fernandes’s recent arrival in Manchester showing how leadership skills should be offered under the brightest spotlights.
The former Chelsea defender said ESPN FC from United’s enigmatic game creator: “There is frustration and it’s understandable when you’ve seen their performances.”
“He started quite well, he showed that he could be a leader, but I think there is a lack of consistency in his game.”
“He is certainly a fantastic player, he showed it at Juventus and at the beginning when he joined Manchester United.”
“Since then there seem to be so many problems around him, in the club or in his teammates that, in fact, we don’t see the Pogba that we want to see with all the qualities it has.”
“Maybe he is a leader in the locker room, but it doesn’t show that he can be a technical leader as Bruno Fernandes immediately showed the crowd when he signed with Manchester United.”
Pogba is now receiving tips to stay with United for at least another 12 months, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer among those who have spoken about the potential to match a record purchase of the club with Portugal international Fernandes.
He told Sky Sports: “Good players can always play together, so they definitely can, it’s a big yes.”

“I think it is exciting … we have an exciting team. I have Scott (McTominay), Fred, Nemanja (Matic). There are many games to come and I am sure we can find a good connection between them.” We have been discussing that as a training team, of course, and we are looking forward to it.
“Of course Bruno came in, causing the impact he made, it was a boost for everyone, the club, the fans and the players. Getting Paul and Marcus Rashford back would be fantastic.”
“Paul has had a difficult season with injuries, and Marcus is also coming back. So for us, and also for them, this gives them an opportunity to start on par or even ahead of other players.”
